3D genome extracted from ‘freeze-dried’ woolly mammoth

A 52,000-year-old woolly mammoth skin was excavated intact from permafrost in Siberia, as seen in this handout photo taken on September 5, 2018, courtesy of Stockholm University. About 52,000 years ago, the skinned hide of a Siberian woolly mammoth was exposed to conditions so frigid that it spontaneously freeze-dried, locking its DNA fragments into place.
